Organic Freeze Dried Emergency Food

Organic freeze dried emergency food is an important part of emergency preparedness.

The most common situations where you may use emergency rations are natural disasters like a bad snowstorm, hurricane, or tornado. In the case of one of these disasters, you may not be able to make it to the grocery store for an extended period of time.

Having meal kits available for your whole family in the event of a weather emergency could be life-saving in long-term or short-term emergencies.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find healthy emergency food to stock up on.

The majority of freeze-dried meals in emergency kits are sprayed with pesticides, contain GMO ingredients, and have artificial fillers and preservatives.

The most common emergency food you will find does not contain organic foods.

Most emergency food is full of sodium and doesn’t contain much, or any, in the way of whole foods. In an emergency situation, we would surely be thankful for any food to get us through.

If we are working on emergency preparedness, we can make the best choice upfront and choose healthy organic prepping options for peace of mind.

The Best Organic Freeze-Dried Emergency food options

Freeze-dried is one of the best food sources to invest in for emergency preparedness food storage.

Freeze-dried food lasts over 25 years if it’s stored correctly, it can stay fresh for decades! It’s easy to transport, store, and prepare.

Bulk amounts of freeze-dried emergency foods come in stackable buckets that make storage and transport easy and convenient.

Almost any type of food can be freeze-dried. Preparing and eating freeze-dried food is as simple as rehydrating and, when appropriate, cooking or just heating it.

The following foods are great-tasting freeze-dried options for emergency food supply:

Long Term Food Storage Options

Storing emergency food in bulk can be a challenge if you don’t have the right storage tools.

Bulk items like beans and grains can be stored in the bags they come in for up to a year. But if you plan to store them longer, you’ll want to use more appropriate containers for long term storage.

Organic meals or ingredients can be stored long term in several different ways.

The most important thing is to store your food in containers that prevent insects and moisture from getting into your food.

Below are our suggestions for long-term food storage products and how to use them.

#10 Cans

Cans are a great long-term storage solution for foods that are dry and shelf-stable with low oil content. These cans are moisture and oxygen-proof. Even cans that have been opened can be resealed with a plastic lid, but not to the same moisture and oxygen-proof extent as their original seal.

In very humid environments, cans may rust. Do not store in direct contact with concrete floors or walls. Concrete holds moisture and may cause your cans to rust.

Foil Pouches/Mylar Bags

Many freeze-dried and dehydrated foods may come in these foil pouches. You can also buy your own convenient re-sealable bags for food storage.

These bags are moisture and oxygen-proof, but they are not rodent-proof. You may want to store your foil pouches or mylar bag packaged foods inside something like a plastic bin or a bucket.

PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) Plastic Bottles

Bottles can be repurposed for food storage, but they have to be the right kind of bottles.

Look for the PETE stamp under the recycle symbol on the bottom of the bottle. Other types of bottles may allow moisture to seep through.

PETE plastic bottles like 2-liter soda bottles are great for storing dry items like beans, corn, and rice. They may also be used to store water.

Make sure that you never use plastic bottles that once stored non-food items.

Sanitize the bottles thoroughly and let them dry out completely for several days before storing your own foods in them. These store nicely standing side by side in a cardboard box or plastic tote so other items can be stacked on top.

Plastic Buckets

Plastic buckets are a perfect addition to your emergency food storage system.

It’s very important to make sure you get food-grade plastic buckets and that the buckets you use have never stored any non-food items.

Buckets are also the best way to store a large number of smaller items that are individually wrapped in plastic or foil, to keep them safe from rodents.

Buckets with lids are great for stacking and a good place to store large amounts of freeze-dried foods.

Some oxygen will leach into plastic buckets over time. It might be a good idea to line your bucket with a large mylar bag for an extra barrier of protection against moisture.

Make sure to store these on pallets or somehow elevated at least one-half inch off the floor. Don’t stack them higher than 3 buckets because the total weight of some foods may be too much for the lids’ seals.

Glass Jars

Glass jars are great repurposed food storage options.

You can use canning jars or reuse your peanut butter or spaghetti sauce jars. Anything glass jar with a lid will do the job. Glass jars can easily break and need to be kept out of direct sunlight to keep the food from deteriorating.
