If you’re dreaming of a scenic mountain getaway packed with outdoor fun, stunning lake views, and memorable family adventures, Lake Tahoe is a must-visit.
We recently spend 4 nights in South Lake Tahoe, and I’m sharing everything we loved – plus helpful travel tips for your own trip!

Our Lake Tahoe Family Vacation
This summer, we took a 4-night family trip to South Lake Tahoe to celebrate our wedding anniversary – and we fell in love with the area just as much as we did 6 years ago!
From breathtaking views to exciting activities, there was no shortage of family fun.
We stayed at the Hampton Inn – a clean, budget-friendly hotel with free breakfasts, a pool, hot tub, and cozy fire pit. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and was centrally located for walking or scooter rides around town.

We flew into Reno-Tahoe International Airport, picked up a rental car, and drove into South Lake Tahoe.
While a rental car was perfect for exploring the full lake loop and lookout points, we also love the rentable electric scooters in town!
With our 12-year-old daughter along, we skipped the casinos and focused on fun, family-friendly experiences:
- Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood
- Putt putt golf
- Shopping
- Beach Walks
- Trail Walks
- Cody Jinks concert at Caesars Outdoor Venue
- Heavenly Village Shopping
- Gondola Rides and Mountain Alpine coaster

We easily could’ve stayed a full week – and probably will next time.
If you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe with kids, below are some helpful tips and must-see spots we think every family should know about.

Family Travel Tips for Visiting Lake Tahoe
Whether it’s your first trip or you’re planning a return visit, here are some helpful tips:
π» Bear Awareness
- Keep food secure: Even in busy areas, bear sightings are common. Donβt leave snacks or coolers in your car overnight.
- Use bear-proof trash cans: Most public areas have them β use them!
- Talk with kids about wildlife safety: No feeding animals, and if you spot a bear, keep your distance and calmly walk away.

ποΈ Be Prepared for Altitude Changes
- South Lake Tahoe sits at over 6,200 feet above sea level β much higher than many are used to.
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and help your body adjust.
- Take it easy the first day, especially if youβre coming from sea level β you might feel a little dizzy or out of breath.

π¦οΈ Expect Sudden Weather Shifts
- Tahoe weather can change quickly β sunny one hour, stormy the next.
- Always carry hiking layers (light jacket, hoodie, hat).
- Check the forecast hourly, especially if youβre boating or hiking.

π Must-See Spots Around Lake Tahoe
Here are a few stops that made our trip extra special β definitely worth adding to your list!
π Emerald Bay State Park & Overlook
- One of the most photographed spots in Lake Tahoe β and for good reason!
- Walk the short trail to the Emerald Bay Overlook for postcard-worthy photos.
- Optional hike down to the beach and Vikingsholm Castle, a hidden gem that feels like a fairytale.

π° Vikingsholm Castle
- Nestled at the base of Emerald Bay, this Scandinavian-style mansion is open for guided summer tours.
- You can hike down from the overlook (~1 mile) or boat/kayak in.
π Scenic Lake Drive
- A full loop around the lake takes about 3 hours without stops, but youβll want to pause often!
- Favorite lookout points: Inspiration Point, Sand Harbor, and Logan Shoals.

β΅ Sand Harbor (East Shore)
- Crystal-clear blue water and sandy beaches make this a top swimming and picnic spot.
- Rentals available for kayaks and paddleboards, plus summer plays at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
ποΈ Taylor Creek Visitor Center
- Family-friendly walking trails (including a paved one to the lake), Stream Profile Chamber, and a great place to spot wildlife.
- Free parking and bathrooms β a hidden gem for a slower-paced morning.

π Heavenly Village & Gondola Ride
- A must-visit hub for families, shopping, and adventure.
- Ride the Heavenly Gondola up the mountain for incredible views of Lake Tahoe and access to the alpine coaster and other mountaintop activities.
- The village itself is full of restaurants, shops, live music, and fire pits β great for relaxing after a day of adventure.

Our Final Thoughts
From relaxing beach days and scenic drives to exciting mountain adventures and live music, Lake Tahoe offers something for every family.
Yes, being on the California Nevada Stateline, you can expect to pay high prices for nearly everything!
Still, if you’re looking for a mountain family vacation, South Lake Tahoe should be on your list!
