How Many Square Feet in One Acre (A Video Tour)

One Acre: How Many Square Feet?

If you’re wondering how many square feet are in one acre, you’ve come to the right place. On our first video, we shared our experience purchasing a lot for sale. Now, we are excited to take you on a tour of our one acre lot, and show you just how big a one acre lot really is. Our video tour is posted below.

How Big is One Acre?

I suppose it depends on who you ask. If you were to ask my husband, one acre is not very big. However, if you ask me, one acre is a great size lot to build a house on. Another factor would be where you currently live.

If you live in New York neighborhoods, or the neighborhoods of chicago, you would likely think one acre of land is big! However, if you are used to country living, one acre of land is fairly small. Either way, answering “how big is one acre?” depends on ones perspective.

How many square feet in one acre?

To answer the question that brought you to Our Blue Ridge House, one acre is 43,560 square feet.

  • One acre – 43,560 sq. ft.
  • Half acre – 21,780 sq. ft.

You can use the acres to square feet converter to find the exact size of your lot.

1 Acre Dimensions

Building a house is a learning curve. I’ll admit, while we were searching for lots for sale in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I, too, wanted to know what are the dimensions of one acre.

I had a general idea how many square feet are in one acre, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around what one acre looked like on a mountain lot. Will the one acre be narrow, but straight back? Are the lot lines perfectly square? Will the lot be shallow but wide? These questions all rolled out of my mouth at one point or another.

The picture above is the one acre lot we will be building our first house on. This lot for sale in the mountains is just perfect for us. As you can see, the dimensions of a one acre lot are not always straight back. Our lot is slanted, and slightly slopes off in the back.

Land for Sale in the Mountains

If you read our story about purchasing a lot, then you know how long it can take to find the right land for sale in the mountains.

Mountain lots are absolutely beautiful. Whether your at the foot of the mountains, or building on a cliff side, a one acre lot will likely be surrounded by beautiful pine trees and forest animals.

Back to the big question; How many square feet in one acre? One thing to consider when buying land for sale in the mountains is your usable land. You may purchase one acre (43,560 square feet), but not all of it may be used for building. For example, you will need to consider the soil, wetlands, rock, etc. You can read more about these environmental issues on Mountain Town magazine.
