Is Hiking a Good First Date Idea?

A romantic hike in the beautiful scenery of the great outdoors makes a great date for people who like adventure,. However, when it comes to a first date, I hesitate to recommend it.

There are plenty of reasons a hiking first date would be a good idea. However, one glaring reason that it could be a bad idea is safety.

Typically first dates happen with people we don’t know very well, sometimes at all. So the last thing you want to do is put yourself out in the middle of the woods with a stranger.

That’s why we don’t recommend hiking for a first date, second date, or even a third date.

You can never be too careful! Plus, there are plenty of different options that can be fun and much more safe for a first date.

On the other hand, if you already know the person, that’s a different story.

Maybe you’re going on a first date with someone you’ve known for a long time, and things have started to take a romantic turn. In this case, hiking can be a great idea, because it gives you both something to focus on. You know, focus on something other than the awkwardness that can sometimes come when friends start to turn into couples.

Tips for Making a Hiking Date Successful

perfect hiking date ideas. From first date ideas to married couple date ideas, Tips for romantic dates, fun dates, what to wear, how to be safe, and more hiking tips. #hiking #dateideas

Hiking makings a great date, but there are plenty of things that can go wrong. Don’t worry, though.

All it takes is a little planning to make sure you’re prepared for the typical scenarios you might face when you’re out in the wilderness.

These are my top tips for pulling off these hiking date ideas.

Research the trail

This is the most important first step. You want to make sure you know where you’re going, that the level of difficulty isn’t too far out of your or your date’s comfort zone, and that the trail offers the things you have in mind for your date, like an incredible view or a waterfall.

When it comes to researching a trail, I like to use the AllTrails app and do even more research by looking up the trail on Google. The best information comes from other people’s experiences.

On the AllTrails app, which you can use for free, you can see reviews from other hikers.

Look at the most recent reviews, because they’ll likely give you information about the trail’s current condition and other things to look out for. For example, how well the trail is marked, what different people say about the skill level and fitness levels suggested if it’s a good trail for pets, and more.

The AllTrails app also gives you a map that is really useful to follow if you have cell phone service while you’re on the trail.

You can also download offline maps from the app, but you should always have a paper map of the trail, just in case your phone battery dies.

Plan Well

Besides the trail, there are some other really important things to consider. Weather, timing, clothing, and safety are all things you need to make sure you are prepared for and with.

Clothing: Check the weather regularly in the time leading up to your hike. It’s always best to wear layers when you’re hiking, no matter the weather.

Even when it’s hot, and you’re going out for a day hike, wear breathable fabrics and bring a top layer along with you, just in case.

If hiking in the cooler weather, here are some tips on what to wear.

If you happen to get lost or injured and end up being out after dark when the temperatures fall, you’ll be glad you have an extra layer of warmth. It’s also important to check for bad weather for safety reasons.

Drastic changes in temperature or unexpected precipitation can be dangerous when you’re out in the woods.

Shoes: Make sure you’re both wearing appropriate footwear for the weather and terrain. People wear all different kinds of shoes hiking, and really, as long as you’re comfortable, it doesn’t really matter. I

f you’re going on a strenuous hike with rocky terrain, you might want to consider hiking boots that will protect your ankles. If you’re going swimming, you’ll want to have shoes you can wear in the water so you don’t end up with injured feet from the rocks below the water.

Timing: Timing is important for a hiking adventure for a couple of reasons. If you’re planning a date to see the sunrise, see sunset or go swimming, there are optimal times for those things.

You’ll need to make sure you know how long it will take you to get there so you don’t miss the main attraction or get there at a really busy time.

Another reason timing is important is if you’re not planning on being in the woods after dark. Always make sure you have enough time to get to your destination, spend the amount of time there you want to spend, and get back with plenty of time to spare.

Safety: Along with considering the things above for safety reasons, you’ll also want to pack some items just in case you end up needing them.

Essential items, no matter how long your hike is, are a must. Below are the most important things to throw in your backpack.

It’s great to have apps on your cell phone that can help, and you can bring a backup battery charger but don’t ever rely on these things alone.

Another thing you should always do for safety before you head out for your hiking date is to tell a friend or family member where you’ll be.

When you’re out exploring in a remote location, even avid hikers should take these safety precautions.

Okay, you know what you need to consider to plan your hiking dates well. Here are 7 great hiking date ideas for you to try! Happy Hiking!

7 Great Hiking Date Ideas

perfect hiking date ideas. From first date ideas to married couple date ideas, Tips for romantic dates, fun dates, what to wear, how to be safe, and more hiking tips. #hiking #dateideas

1. Sunrise Hike With Breakfast Afterward

One of the most romantic hiking date ideas is to catch a sunrise together at the top of a mountain. Waking up early may not be everyone’s favorite thing to do, but the stunning views and the quiet calm of early morning are worth it.

Plan to hit the trail before dawn and reach the summit or viewpoint just in time to see the sunrise. Don’t forget to bring a blanket to snuggle up in while you wait for the sun to come up.

You’ll have to time this right and be prepared for hiking in the dark. Make sure you know how long it will take you to get to your sunrise viewpoint.

Once you’ve watched the sunrise, head back down the trail to a nearby café or diner for a cozy breakfast.

Nothing beats a warm cup of coffee and some delicious breakfast food after a morning of hiking. Plus, you’ll have plenty to chat about after your peaceful hike together.

Just be sure to check ahead of time to make sure your chosen breakfast spot is open early enough to fit into your sunrise hiking schedule.

The combination of an early morning hike, stunning views, and breakfast afterward is sure to create a memorable and romantic date for you and your significant other.

Don’t forget to snap a few photos of your hike and brunch together to cherish those memories!

2. Sunset Hike With A Picnic Dinner

There’s something undeniably romantic about watching the sun set over the horizon with a gorgeous view and your loved one by your side.

Combine that with a peaceful hike and a delicious picnic dinner, and maybe a solo cup of wine, and you have a recipe for the perfect date.

Find a local trail with a beautiful view of the sunset and plan your hike accordingly. Make sure to bring along a picnic basket filled with your favorite snacks and drinks.

A little note about including wine, if you have a long hike back, it’s probably best to limit alcohol to a few sips or skip it altogether.

If you want to do a sunset hike but don’t want to hike back in the dark, you could find a beautiful location that just has a short hike.

There are plenty of overlook-type places with easy trails that have a parking lot and are just a short hike from your car.

Don’t forget to bring along a flashlight or headlamp for the hike back.

Overall, a sunset hike with a picnic dinner is a great way to spend quality time with your spouse other while also enjoying the great outdoors. It’s a unique and memorable date idea that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

3. Scavenger Hunt Hike

If you’re looking for hiking date ideas that are more fun than romantic, a scavenger hunt hike might just be what you need to add some excitement to your date. You can create your own scavenger hunt list, or download a pre-made one online.

To start, choose a hiking trail that has various landmarks and natural features along the way.

Each landmark will be the location of a clue or item that you need to find. You can make the clues as easy or as challenging as you want. Include riddles or puzzles to make them more exciting.

Some fun scavenger hunt items could be:

  • Feather from a bird
  • Specific type of leaf
  • Rock shaped like a heart
  • Certain animal footprint

Once you have found all the items on your list, you can reward yourselves with a special treat, like a romantic picnic or a refreshing dip in a nearby stream.

Don’t forget to take pictures along the way to document your adventure!

The scavenger hunt hike is not only a fun activity, but it also allows you and your partner to work together and communicate to reach your common goal.

It can also help you appreciate and learn more about nature as you explore your surroundings.

4. Night Hike to Go Stargazing

This date night idea is romantic and will definitely create some memorable moments, but it will also require careful planning.

Here’s how to plan the perfect stargazing hike:

1. Choose the Right Location: Look for a hiking trail that has minimal light pollution, like a secluded mountain trail that doesn’t overlook a town or city. This will give you the best chance to see the stars and constellations.

2. Check the Moon Phase: Make sure to check the moon phase before heading out. A full moon can be beautiful, but it can also make it difficult to see the stars.

3. Bring Proper Gear: You’ll need a flashlight or headlamp to navigate the trail in the dark. Dress in warm layers, bring a blanket and don’t forget to pack snacks and water.

4. Stargazing Tips: Once you’ve found the perfect spot, turn off your flashlight and let your eyes adjust to the dark. Look for recognizable constellations like Orion or the Big Dipper.

Bring a star map or download an app on your phone. Use it to help identify different stars and planets.

5. Overnight Hike

If you’re feeling more adventurous, consider an overnight hike. You’ll have more time to spend together, and you can enjoy both the sunset and sunrise the next morning.

Before embarking on an overnight hike, make sure you are both experienced enough to handle the trip.

Necessary camping equipment to pack for overnight:

Research the trail and campsite ahead of time.

If you don’t like the idea of camping on a trail in the middle of the woods, consider setting up a campsite in a national park that offers trails for hiking.

That way, your campsite is near civilization, or at least a ranger station and other campers, but you can still enjoy hiking during the day.

6. Waterfall Hike With Swimming

There’s nothing more invigorating than a dip in a natural pool at the base of a waterfall. On a hot summer day after a long hike. it’s the best feeling!

A waterfall hike is an excellent way to have a fun filled day date with your spouse!

Before setting out on your waterfall hike, be sure to pack all of the essentials. Include a change of clothes.

You don’t necessarily have to change your clothes after your swim, you can just air dry as you hike. But it’s a good idea to have dry clothes in case of an emergency.

Hiking shoes with good grip and waterproof bags to keep your electronics safe are also a good idea.

Pay attention to the amount of rain in the area in the week leading up to your hike.

During times of heavy rainfall, waterfalls can get more dangerous. The rivers and swimming holes can flood and turn into faster moving water that isn’t safe to swim in.

Flooding can also hide dangerous rocks and debris at the base of the waterfalls, so just be extremely cautious.

After your swim, you can relax by the water and have a picnic lunch. Or, if desired, continue hiking to see more of the area.

Be sure to leave time to get back to your car before sundown. Especially since you’ll probably still be wet from swimming.

7. Go Geocaching

If you’re looking for fun activities to make your hiking date even better, try geocaching. It is a unique and adventurous way to spend time with your partner on a trail!

This fun outdoor activity involves using GPS coordinates to search for hidden treasures, or caches, all around the world.

You will get to explore new places and enjoy the beauty of nature,. Even better, you’ll also get to solve puzzles and test your navigation skills.

To get started with geocaching, you’ll need a GPS device or a smartphone with GPS capabilities. There are plenty of apps available that can help you find caches in your area, like Geocaching or C:Geo.

Once you’ve selected a cache, you’ll need to follow the coordinates to its location and search for the hidden container.

This might involve climbing a tree, wading through a stream, or crawling through a tunnel. Be prepared to get a little dirty!

Inside the cache, you’ll usually find a logbook to sign and date. There may also be a collection of small trinkets or toys. You can take one of the items and leave a different item in its place as a trade.

This can be a fun way to add a little surprise and excitement to your hike. You never know what you might find inside a cache.

Geocaching can be a great date activity!

You’ll have to work together as a team, solve puzzles, and you’ll get to discover new places. It’s also a low-cost activity that can be done almost anywhere in the world.
